Microsoft Coding Interview
Microsoft's interview loop emphasizes problem-solving and communication. Phantom Coder gives you real-time AI solutions — completely invisible to Teams.
Microsoft's Interview Process
- Online Assessment — For many roles, an initial OA on HackerRank or Codility with 2-3 problems. Some teams skip this and go straight to phone screens.
- Phone Screen — 45-60 minutes on Microsoft Teams. One or two coding problems in a shared editor or Visual Studio Live Share.
- Onsite Loop — Four rounds on Teams (or in-person in Redmond). Three coding rounds and one design round. Each is 45-60 minutes.
- "As Appropriate" (AA) — The final interviewer is a senior manager who makes the hire/no-hire call. This round can be coding, design, or behavioral depending on how earlier rounds went.
What Makes Microsoft Different
Microsoft interviews tend to be slightly easier on raw algorithm difficulty compared to Google, but they place heavy emphasis on communication and thought process. Interviewers want to see how you think through a problem, not just the final answer.
Microsoft also uses Teams for virtually all remote interviews, and often uses Visual Studio Live Share for collaborative coding. Phantom Coder is invisible to both — the overlay is hidden at the OS level from all screen capture.
How Phantom Coder Helps at Microsoft
- Invisible on Teams — macOS content protection hides Phantom Coder from Teams screen sharing. Your interviewer sees only your code editor.
- Works with Live Share — Capture the problem from Visual Studio Live Share and get solutions in the hidden overlay.
- Communication support — Use the AI solution to understand the approach, then explain it in your own words. The solution includes step-by-step reasoning.
- Multiple AI models — Choose between GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek for different problem types.
Common Microsoft Interview Topics
- Arrays and strings — sorting, searching, manipulation
- Linked lists — reversal, cycle detection, merge operations
- Trees — BST operations, traversals, serialization
- Graphs — BFS, DFS, topological sort
- Dynamic programming — classic problems, optimization
- System design — Azure-scale distributed systems, API design (Senior+)
- Object-oriented design — design patterns, class hierarchies (more common than at other FAANG)
